A Practical, Working Guide to Breaking the Chain of Addiction, January 15, 2007

Reviewer: Brenda Purvis –

I highly recommend this book to counselors or individuals seeking practical methods of dealing with pornography addiction. Dr. Skinner’s does a great job of describing the drivers and nature of the problem and his approach outlines doable steps toward recovery. It is the best book on the subject I have seen. We are now recommending it to individuals in our counseling practice with good success.

A great supplement to works by Patrick Carnes!!!, December 22, 2006

Reviewer: Nicholas the Pilgrim (Washington State) –

This is another excellent book in the literature of recovery from sexual addictions. While the title states it’s about “Treating Pornography Addiction,” the material here will be helpful, and encouraging, to anyone dealing with any number of sexual, lust and love-related addictions.

While the author, Dr. Kevin B. Skinner, makes abundant use of the work done by Dr. Patrick Carnes and his colleagues, Skinner provides some additional insights that are either not covered by Carnes, or are presented in a different manner. While I would highly recommend the many helpful titles written by Carnes, I believe that Skinner provides a much-needed supplement to that body of literature.

One of the things that stands out in Skinner’s book here is his clear description of the chemical reactions that take place within an individual as one contemplates and moves toward his or her object of lust (usually pornography), which frequently results in acting out. Just the awareness of the drug effect of this disease should be enough to make many individuals more guarded when those initial thoughts of lust, or temptation, get started. Skinner provides the tools to develop an alternate plan when those temptations arise.

Another thing that stands out in this work is Skinner’s emphasis on reducing shame when an individual succumbs to the temptation to act out. He spends a great deal of time encouraging the recovering addict to learn from each slip and to discover ways to prevent similar slips in the future. There is great encouragement in knowing that recovering addicts are bound to slip up on the road to recovery, but as long as things are learned from each experience, and effort is made to avoid a repeat, all is not lost. One is actually moving in the right direction.

Skinner offers a lot of practical advice. He spends a couple of chapters on the importance of keeping a journal. He is very specific in the types of information, and most importantly the level of honesty, that one puts into a journal. One chapter is devoted entirely to a sampling of an individual’s journal over the course of seven months of recovery. To follow this individual’s road to recovery is enlightening, and encouraging. It also helps to reinforce many of the principles Skinner makes earlier in the book.

It is my impression that any reader struggling with this type of addiction, or someone close to such an individual, would benefit from reading this book. By all means, read the books by Patrick Carnes, but add this one to the list. Dr. Skinner also provides some additional tools and information on his web site at his GrowthClimate web site.

This book has helped many people to understand the basic concepts of how to recover from a pornography problem. It will help you as well
